Leaping Into the Future

Brief Overview or Introduction

Summary: This is a complete book design project including cover design, interior typesetting, layout, formatting as well as illustration of some of the interior graphs and figures.

Client: Royal Collins; with offices in China and Canada.

Problem: The book design had to be complete in two weeks, and it was quite a complex manuscript, with footnotes, graphs, figures, charts, references, page numbers (folios), and page headings (running headers). The manuscript also featured special glyphs from the Russian and Chinese language.

Process & Development

Research: The initial research involved reading large parts of the manuscript and finding correlations with art and design historical movements.

Conceptualisation: The presented concepts focused on various themes, international economy, bilateral trade, political figures, Russian and American city skylines, and industry. 

Final Solution/Design: For the final cover design the Client requested that I remove the main image and leave the background vector graphics, while adding a few icons. For the book interior I was fortunate to use the Indesign template provided by the Client.

Tools & Technologies Used: Adobe Illustrator, Indesign.

Results & Impact:  The design was completed in time, and the editor help correct every minute error. 

Testimonials or Client Feedback: The Client’s satisfaction was expressed solely in their full payment.

Challenges & Learnings: A challenge in this project was the fact that there was a lot of Russian footnotes. I learned that I could search for a style in Indesign where I normally search for words, this made it much faster to replace styles throughout the whole book.
