Project goals: Design unique photobooks including:

  • Interior layout, typesetting, and formatting

  • A timeline infographic design of all their projects combined

  • A cover design

  • Made to fit Q-Photo photobook dimensions

  • Submit to Q-Photo and handle payments and issues

  • Collection and delivery to client pick-up point

Client: Insite Landscape Architects.

Challenges

Problem: One of the problems was the layout of a complex and large amount of information that does not necessarily relate to each other in a linear fashion.

Role

Responsibilities: The project commenced with a client meeting and a discussion on the role of the key personnel. My initial role as the Designer involved creating a wireframe for all the pages of each set of photobooks, as well as a template grid, using the index and numerous folders of photos, and to present this to the client.

Process & Development

Research: The initial phase involved researching various layout grids as well as corporate photobooks and annual reports, and the Gamsberg brand identity by perusing information on their website.

Conceptualisation: The initial concept featured a clean template with a modular grid and placeholder content.

Iterations: The first iteration showcased photos placed in placeholders.

Prototypes: The primary prototype was a PDF draft with all the photos placed.

Final Solution/Design: The final design utilised a combination of serif and sans serif typography, with their brand’s serif font for the headings and body text to denote conservatism, reflecting the conservative values of the mine, which seeks to conserve the environment where it is situated. The layout adopted an organic modular grid as solution to the nonliniarity of the content and to represent the informality and diversity of the culture at Gamsberg Mine, comprising many ethnic groups and informal social relations, which is reflected in the photos. The cover adopted a stricter modular grid with no grid violations to denote their serious brand persona.

Tools & Technologies Used: A range of tools from physical to digital, including paper notebooks, pencils, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and others.

Results & Impact: The glossy photobooks and matte black packaging boxes were sealed and delivered to Gamsberg Mine in Namibia.

Testimonials or Client Feedback: The Gamsberg personnel were thrilled, and one person requested an additional copy of his particular photobook.

Challenges & Learnings: Balancing the time spent on the project within the budget was challenging. Time constraints were

significant, as was the bottleneck at Q-Photo, which was already quite busy. We had to rush to RapidStudio in Johannesburg to print the last few photobooks on time.
