Project Title

Genetic Chronicles trilogy 

Brief Overview or Introduction

Summary: Sunbury Press in the United States subcontracted Riaan Wilmans Art & Design to create cover designs for Virginia Soenksen’s Genetics Chronicles series.

Project goals: 

• understand the author and publisher’s needs
• create concept designs and present them to the client
• integrate client feedback
• send final print-ready and web-optimised versions

Client: Sunbury Press

Problem: The author stated that the market seems to be saturated with black over art, and needed something bright instead.

Role

Responsibilities: Graphic Design, Graphic Art, Illustration.

Process & Development:

Research: The initial phase involved discussions with the author directly which is a rare delight since most publishers act as a mediator between a designer and author. The author provided book descriptions, key moments in the books, image references, possible themes, preferred colours, possible elements to include, a preferred typeface, as well as a visual genre which is more than any designer can ask for.

Conceptualisation: The original concepts included variations of the author’s requested designs.

Iterations: The iterations integrated the feedback from the author.

Prototypes: There were no prototypes.

Final Solution/Design: The final designs was a series of dystopian sci-fi cover designs.
